Home / Content of Their Character: Pikuah Nefesh (When LIfe is at Stake)
Grades: 6-Adult Content of Their Character lessons offer students a definition and text study of Jewish values with practical applications. Each of these lesson folders contains material for three to four forty-five-minute classroom sessions.
Pikuah Nefesh is a foundational principle of Jewish law. Most classical Jewish literature speaks of how it is a mitzvah to violate Shabbat in order to save a human life. There are dozens and dozens of important legal decisions that have to do with variances to classical observance in order to save a life. However,
if you search the web, you will find dozens of articles and sites that connect Pikuah Nefesh to organ transplant. This lesson will address that issue in the final case.
